Jack and Sally Bento

I am so excited to share this next bento with everyone. I am very pleased with how it turned out.

But first of all, a little background info: I am already getting excited about Halloween. I had my "Trick or Treat" mug out this weekend and was sipping spicy teas from it; dreaming up designs for my jack-o-lantern this year. So it was only natural that my mind would turn to The Nightmare Before Christmas when choosing a bento to do for Monday.

(For my mom, who I'm sure will be shocked that this is now a favorite flick of mine, I must say, "It's not really about ghouls - it's a romance!")

I was at home feeling pretty puny all weekend, which gave me plenty of time to mess around with this bento and get it just the way I wanted it. And here it is:

Close-up of the love-birds:

All packed up and ready to go:

  • Steamed white rice background
  • Usuyaki tamago (thin omlette) moon
  • Nori cut out of Jack and Sally
  • Iceburg lettuce filler
  • Homegrown tomatoes (4)
  • Carrot shards
  • Filet mignon
Happy Bento!

Haha my initial thought reading the list of what's in it was "Eww, cut out of Jack & Sally?!" and then I was like, "Jack & Sally cut out of nori, no?" and finally "Oh! a cutout! DUH!" (Not for one second did I believe you cut anything out of poor Jack & Sally... and I don't know if cut out is one word when used that way, I just put it that way to make my comment flow better)
lol :)
excellent job!

Very impressive! How did you cut out the nori so perfectly? Mine always cracks and breaks when I try to do cutouts.

Excellent! My Teen Queen is in awe of your talents.

I would have to vote "Don Juan Demarco" one of my fave movies of all times. How about that Zoro mask?!

That is wonderful!! You're so artistic, I'd hate to eat that!

I'll admit it's also one of my favorite movies - it's a romance, and it's about being yourself and daring to try new things even if you fail. A lesson that needs refreshing every now and then :)

So beautiful. I love the moon background and the clean lines the x-acto knife left. The little tomato at the bottom was just perfection too. It looked EXACTLY like a little pumpkin.
